We spent the weekend starting to paint the nursery (not quite finished). Don't worry, I was using zero-VOC paint and took frequent breaks. However, this is our first redecorating project since we got Rajah, and he is simply too dependent to stay out of things like a normal cat. For example, he did NOT understand the following things:
- why we were home on a weekday (we both had President's Day off and we both took Tuesday off)
- why, since we were home on a weekday, we were not getting up at 6 am, which led to scratching and meowing at our door
- why he couldn't come in the room when he's always been allowed in there before
- why he couldn't attack the mysterious white stuff sticking out from under the closed door (the drop cloth)
- why he should not eat the crumbly white stuff on the floor (spackling)
- why he could not run across the room and jump in anything in the room (i.e., wet paint)
- why we were smart enough to catch him when he tried to sneak up on the wet paint by only moving a few feet at a time
Thus, it was a very interesting weekend and will continue to be interesting until we're done. I'll post pictures when we're done. A question for everyone: what is your opinion on nursery must-haves? I'm referring to the actual furniture pieces rather than supplies like diapers, etc. Crib or just use a pack 'n play? Dresser? Changing table? Recliner vs. glider? I'd love to get everyone's opinion!

Oh yes I will gladly give my 2 cents :)
MUST Have a changing table. Yes, Yes, Yes. Jamison is 2 1/2 andi am still using it. One with storage for sure!!
We had a crib but kept it in our room. So I would say a crib for the nursery and a bassinete for your room. You Will want the baby by you in the begining.
I HIGHLY recommend having several "stations" set up around the house. Just a small basket with a few diapers, wipes, and a few burp cloths. It was so helpful to not have to truck to another room when your already settled in the livingroom for example. Best thing my sister had me do, little stations.
I totaly think you need some form of a rocker. I had a lazy boy, my sister in law has a massageing lazy boy ;), but the gliders are nice too. Whatever is comfortable to you now is the way to go. You should just go ahead and get one and start using it now. I guess it is nice to have one in the nursery but in the beginning your in survival mode and will probably just have it in your living room. I planted myself in the recliner and didn't move for the first month. Very nice ;)
Oh I an offer oh so much more but Terry has to start preschool and I need to get Jamison up.
Good job on getting things set up.
I would definitely say get a crib. We used a pack'n'play with the bassinet feature for the first month while Mark was in our room, but now, while he can sleep in the base of the pack'n'play, he's big enough to almost touch all sides. Your mom's is bigger (a square), but it lacks the bassinet which we did like for the first little while.
As for a changing table, we just have a three drawer dresser from IKEA and put a pad on top. So, we still have storage for diapers and everything in the top drawer, but have other clothes and odds and ends in the other. I also like that it will still be useful even when we now longer have kids in diapers. The station idea is good. We don't do it since it's like 20 feet to his room, but for a larger home, it'd be nice.
We have a glider, although I have heard good things about lazy boys as well. We really just don't have the space for one of those so the glider won. We kept it in our bedroom so I wouldn't have to go far when I breastfed at night (doing it in bed didn't work for me) and then moved it into his room once he moved in there.
Good luck with the preparations.
We had a pack n play with bassinet at first (which you can borrow if you want) and then I think a crib is a must. Max will be in a crib for awhile still. My kids don't sleep in the room with me by the way. I didn't do stations either since we weren't far from his room and I LOVE my changing table. I don't have a dresser but put up a sweater organizer in the closet. The dresser with a pad on top is a good idea. I wish I had a dresser for a girl with all the little dresses and bottoms. I have just not spent the money yet but I will. I have a glider but was just thinking the other day that I think I will get a recliner (a smaller one) for the next kid. NOT leather though - it's too cold in the middle of the night. I really like having a chair in their room to feed them in and cuddle them when they are scared.
My two cents:
crib: definitely. (with that said, Colin slept the pack n play for the first 9 months of his life and Maddie's still in it)
Changing table: no. (sounds like I'm in the minority there)
Glider vs recliner: I like both!
On this issue, I don't really have an opinion but just to do what is comfortable and easiest for you.
I just want to let you know I'm excited for you both (as you've heard before). Hope all is well and the IVF sounds like it was pretty intense.
I think a crib is a must. We used the pack-n-play that has the bassinet in our room for a few months. It also had a changer on it with diaper storage, etc. I didn't feel that with a first child we needed a changing table of any kind. I had enough storage for stuff on shelves in the closet. We changed on the floor on a blanket most of the time. I am getting one this time to protect baby from our crazy 2 year old. :) I would have loved a glider on the first one. I have rocking chair that has been in the family for years but it is so rigid and just not super comfortable. Also, I found that diaper genies fill up super fast. I would suggest if you use one that maybe save it for the poopy diapers.
